A Call to Rest

Busyness

It’s the nature of our lives in the current culture.

Jobs, families, chores, meals, church, sports, clubs, school, hobbies, fitness…

None of it is bad, but it all requires time. And no matter how old we are, how rich we are, or how dedicated we are, we only get 24 hours each day.

Busyness can be physically and emotionally draining.  What’s more, it can drain your relationships too. The sense of being overwhelmed can lead to forgetfulness, frustration, and even physical discomfort.  That was my reality not long ago as chest pains, choking sensations, and tension headaches became nearly a daily occurrence.  As I looked at my responsibility “plate,” there was very little that I could abandon.  Yet, I wasn’t content to tolerate my “new normal.”

Let me first say that you cannot underestimate the power of partnership or the power of prayer!  I’m so thankful for family and friends that prayed and continue to pray with me and for me!  There are days I feel like Moses with a battle at my feet.  Yet, I’m blessed with people to hold me up through the “fight!” (Exodus 17)

In an effort to conquer my stress, I talked with the doctor, pursued natural methods, and took steps to lower my salt intake.*  But I also knew that my body was calling out for rest!  There’s a reason that Our Creator chose to rest on the 7th day.  He modeled rest for us, not because He needed it, but because He knew that we would!

On a side note**: Choosing to push ourselves beyond reason seems noble… but in reality, it is a symptom of pride.  Does any of this sound familiar? “If I want it done right, I have to do it myself.”  “It’s just easier to do it alone.”  “I don’t want to bother anyone with my needs.” “I don’t have time to show someone how to do this.”  While all of these might be true, there’s something humbling and heartening about asking for help and enjoying the reward of working alongside another to achieve a goal!  And in all truth… there are other people who can do what we do just as well if not better! (Check out Jethro’s wisdom for Moses in Exodus 18.)  **There is no extra charge for this challenge side note! 🙂

During this season I felt the Lord say, “I’m issuing a call to rest!  Come sit here with Me and rest!”  I knew this was not just a word for me, but for all of us who are expending loads of energy just to keep everything afloat.  In the book of Mark, the disciples were so busy with the people that they didn’t even have time to eat.  Jesus called to His friends, “Come with Me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

Sit & Listen… Can you hear His call to you and me in the midst of life’s busyness? “Come to Me and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

When we choose to rest in Our Father’s presence, it restores our mind’s focus, rejuvenates our body, and feeds our spirit. A day free of responsibility is fabulous, but rare.  So, be tenacious about finding mini-chunks of rest scattered through your busy days.  Listen as He whispers your name, calling you to rest with Him.

Just as a note of rest on a music sheet ushers in a sweeter tune, your time of rest will bring a sweeter, resounding sense of strength to complete what lies ahead.

Abundant Redemption

Have you ever gone to a restaurant where they are rather stingy with their condiments?  They give you one ketchup for your large fries or a little sauce cup for 10 nuggets.  At the bottom of your bag is a single napkin already touched with grease.  The “just enough” service is not for me.  I’m the kind of girl that likes a whole roll of paper towels on my table and the full bottle of dressing nearby!  I prefer the “more than enough” mentality!

I’m so thankful for a Heavenly Dad who gives us more than enough!  He is not stingy with His love, His comfort, or His healing.  He is the Redeemer who goes above and beyond to bring us restoration!  He gave His life for us so that we could spend eternity in fellowship with Him!

But He didn’t stop there!  Because Our Redeemer is a “more than enough” God!  He provides healing for our souls too (Psalm 34:22). Healing from difficult hurts often takes much longer than you and I would like.  Sometimes we feel like we should be able to slap a bandage on life’s pain and when we pull it off a few days or a week later, “Tada!” all signs of the wound are about gone.  However, emotional healing is a more lengthy and rather inglorious process.  Even years into my own healing process, I found that certain memories were tainted.  Something simple like a location or an innocent comment would trigger a painful memory.

So it was the other night when I drove past a particular road.  The enemy tried to blindside me with painful thoughts and I squashed them down as I’ve learned to do.  Just then, I felt a prompting to stop by a friend’s house in that same area to drop something off.  After that quick errand, I started to drive away and saw a lovely work of art in the sky!  I felt like the Lord said, “See, I am still redeeming what you thought you’d lost!”  Right then, He blessed me with a new memory!  It’s not the first time He’s done that and I know it won’t be the last.  He is the Abundant Redeemer!  He will fully restore all that the enemy has stolen!

“O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is mercy, And with Him is abundant redemption (Psalm 130:7 NKJV).”  The Passion Translation of this verse says this:O Israel, keep hoping, keep trusting, and keep waiting on the Lord, for He is tenderhearted, kind, and forgiving. He has a thousand ways to set you free!”

My “more than enough” God has a thousand ways to set me free!  He has and will redeem painful memories, hurting relationships, and the bruises of a tender heart.  What He does for me, He will do for you too!  Do you need some things in your life redeemed?  Have you had memories stolen or dreams smashed?  Have you had relationships ripped apart or peace obliterated?

Then borrow some of my faith and latch onto these truths:

God restores the soul! (Psalm 23:2

He redeems our mind, will, and emotions (Psalm 69:18)

Our Dad heals the brokenhearted! (Psalm 147:3)

The King of kings creates beauty from ashes

He trades a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (Isaiah 61:1-3)

Our Lord will fill you with joy! (Psalm 16:11)

He is a good God and a good Dad!  He loves you and wants to abundantly redeem all the hurting places in your life!  How deeply I love my Heavenly Dad!  He continues to show Himself faithful!

Live Loved,

If I can agree with you in prayer for a healing in your life, please let me know!  I would be honored to pray for and with you!

Stress… that’s my savage beast!

Life is stressful!  Even when things are going well, stress is par for the course.  But there are times when the stress is more intense and managing it becomes a priority.  One of my anti-stress go-tos is music!

The two songs I’m posting today offer truths that compliment one another….  “Don’t worry” & “Pray till your breakthrough breaks through the ceiling!”  Both can be summed up in Philippians 4:6-8!

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

As you listen to these songs, let that prescription soak in: Don’t worry, Give thanks, Pray, Believe the good report!  God is always “Right on Time!”  Here’s Aaron Cole & TobyMac:

“I know your problems seem God sized
If you can see ’em through God’s eyes (take a looksie)
Yeah, he’s right on time, right on time!”1

Follow that great advice with this from Unspoken: “Don’t you give up on a miracle! You’ve got to speak to the impossible. You’ve got to pray till your break through breaks through the ceiling, keep on believing! Don’t you give up, don’t you give up on a miracle!”2

Hope these songs speak to your soul too!

Favorite Music Friday the 13th!

Upon waking up this morning, one of my very first thoughts was, “Thank You, Lord!  It’s Friday!”  The 13th or not, Fridays are welcome days to this teacher!

If your chosen field encounters as many bumpy days as mine, you probably crave some quiet moments of relaxation as often as possible.  One of the ways I relax is with soothing music filled with lovely piano notes and maybe some cello or violin.

The Piano Guys are some of my faves!  They do a beautiful rendition of “Let It Go” from Frozen. There are just too many good pieces by TPG to say this is my favorite, but I enjoy this tune and the scenery too!

Here’s another unique number by these talented guys: What Makes You Beautiful.

But I couldn’t stop there!  Check out this wonderful Greatest Showman medley by Lindsey Stirling!  Her vibrant and passionate playing captures my imagination!

Enjoy! Soak in some relaxation and have a wonderfully blessed weekend!

Walking On Water

“You need to get out of the boat and start walking on the water!”

Wait…. I need to what?

It was one of those “valley times” in my life.  I was trying so hard to trust that the Lord was at work in my circumstances.  But quite honestly, I really didn’t fully trust He could handle it all for me.  My mouth was saying, “I trust You,” but my hands were gripped tight to the helm still trying to make life work out the way I felt it should.

Trusting the Lord explicitly had always been a struggle for me.  I’d known it down deep for a long time, but I’d managed to keep that knowledge tucked away in my heart until the time when I couldn’t anymore.  As security began to be stripped away, the truth surfaced.  And the Lord whispered in my ear, “It’s time to deal with this.”

Over and over in Scripture, we are presented with the understanding that God is a Father1.  Isaiah 9:6 declares that He is our Everlasting Father! For those with a fabulous relationship with their earthly father, this presents a ready connection enabling them to grab ahold of God as an amazing Heavenly Father.   Unfortunately, there are far too many whose earthly father created an unhealthy understanding of what fatherhood is…  and that image is transferred to our Heavenly Father, unfairly.

I loved my dad and I know he loved me.  He loved the Lord too and carried an anointing to teach on his life.  However, he was human and like me, imperfect.  Because he was a diabetic, managing his sugar was an issue.  Many times throughout my growing up years, his sugar imbalances caused mood swings, an explosive temper, and often irrational responses to situations.   Those experiences led me to believe that even though God loved me, He also could be moody, hard to please, and impatient with my failures. Untrustworthy.

I can imagine what you’re thinking…  when I grew in my faith, I should have known that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).  I should understand that God was not like my dad. I should’ve grasped that God loves me unconditionally, right?!

Head knowledge rarely becomes heart knowledge without experience opening the door.

During this valley journey, I asked a trusted friend to pray with me.  After our prayer time, she dropped a truth bomb, “You need to get out of the boat and start walking on the water!  You need to let go of trying to control and stand back, trusting God to do His work.”

As my mind processed the idea, I came to the place where I couldn’t shove down the trust struggle anymore.  I laid it all out on the table and looked up at my Heavenly Father… who already knew all about it… and asked Him what He wanted me to do.  In the still of that moment, He showed me where I needed to let go.  I didn’t wait, I didn’t waiver, I did what I knew He was directing me to do that very evening.  I let go of the wheel in the midst of my storm and I stepped out of the boat.

I’d like to say it was easy, but it wasn’t.  I’d like to say that the storm stopped immediately, but it didn’t.  I’d like to say that I felt totally exhilarated, but I didn’t.

However, I learned that when I keep my eyes on Jesus, the storm won’t defeat me!  I learned that He IS trustworthy!  He is not moody, or inconsistent, or grumpy.  He loves me so deeply that there is nothing I can do to change that…  And He never left me, especially in the midst of my storm!

Because I trusted in Him, He brought me victory on the other side of that storm!

Recently, NeedtoBreathe came out with a song called, “Walking on Water.” How this song speaks to me!  It reminds me of my journey learning to trust the Lord, unconditionally.  There’s no turnin’ back!

The lyrics that pop out to me are:

“But You call me lovely
You say I’m wonderfully made
Your river floods me
Your words feel like a serenade
I love that You are thinkin’ of me
All of those voices fade away
When You call me lovely
Lo-o-ovely

I Just Can’t… or Can I?

A humorous moment from the 1998 version of The Parent Trap has Natasha Richardson’s character launching into a stress-induced tirade and declaring, in her beautifully British voice, “I can’t handle this!” (Insert your best British accent here!)  She is about to come face to face with the father of her children whom she hasn’t seen in 11 years.  She follows that comment with the statement, “I’m not mature enough for this!”   As her rant continues, her fussing reflects her insecurities.*  While the scene provides us some chuckles, the reality is that I’ve had a few tirades like this myself!

There have been times in my life when I’ve felt the same exasperation and thrown my hands up declaring, “I just can’t handle this!” I can’t forgive like I should.  I can’t embrace the struggle I face.  I can’t ignore the difficult people I encounter. I can’t meet the demands in my mailbox. I can’t juggle the balls being thrown my way. I just can’t!

And I’m not supposed to… alone!

You see, we weren’t designed to face these challenges alone.  Even Jesus, in His greatest time of need, sought the Father’s help and asked His disciples to pray with Him (Matthew 26:36-39).  In His wisdom, He realized that He didn’t need to face His destiny alone.  So, why do we try to manage life on our own?

In the world, independence is a sign of maturity.  But the Kingdom of God is upside down!  The more we depend on God and His faithfulness, the more maturity is evident in our lives. If you’ve been around Biblical teaching for long, you’ve probably heard of the 10-finger prayer found in Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me!The Amplified version brings a deeper clarity to this declaration (but you’ll need more fingers!):

“I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him Who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]”

You and I are ready for anything and equal to anything through Christ because He infuses us with inner strength and confident peace! That’s a revelation that I need to grab and embrace!  We truly can do it!  We can face each day’s challenges because of our confidence in who He is and what He can do!  It’s not us, but Him IN us that enables our “can.”  His grace is sufficient to see us through the challenges each day presents (II Corinthians 12:9).

Through Holy Spirit strength, we can forgive.  Through Him, we can embrace.  In Him, we can ignore, we can meet demands, and we can juggle whatever balls life throws in our direction.

Don’t misunderstand, facing our challenges will not be easy, simple, short, or painless.  But it is do-able!  We can do it!

Allow this truth to sink deep in your spirit!  You CAN handle it!  He promised to never leave you… so, whatever you encounter, you are not alone. You CAN handle it because His strength infuses you!

There is an old gospel song by Cristy Lane that said it well,

“One day at a time, sweet Jesus
That’s all I’m asking from You.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday, what I have to do.
Yesterday’s gone, sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine.
Lord, help me today, show me the way
One day at a time”**

  • Pause in the midst of your pain.
  • Stop when the stress comes rolling through.
  • Delay when the demands are overwhelming.

Whisper His name and invite Him to come to you in the midst of your challenge.

Look back at the victories, then look forward in faith!

When we focus on His Word, His presence, and His love for us, we find ourselves infused with confidence and peace that will enable us to be equal to whatever our day brings.  You Can Handle It!

Phew… I really needed to be reminded of this truth!  Live Loved,

The Little Word that Roars!

Hopeless… the sense or belief that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It tries to convince us that nothing will ever be right again.  It’s claim is that God’s mercy is not bigger than our messiness. Hopelessness is giving in to what “hopeless” is whispering to our hearts.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.” Proverbs 13:12 NKJV

At one time, I thought this verse was referring to unfulfilled hope making our hearts ache.  However, it is possible to view this verse differently and find an applicable truth.  Deferred means to put off or delay.  Could it be that what makes our hearts ache is not the lack of what we hope for, but the lack of hope?  When we put off hoping, thinking that what we long for isn’t in our future, it is then that our hearts truly ache from the loss… the loss of hope, the loss of expectancy.

But when desire comes, when hope rises in us, there is life and expectancy!

Hope… it’s the little word that roars in our spirits!  Hope is that ember of burning coal in an otherwise spent fire.  It is the fallen warrior who rises up on the abandoned battle field.  Hope is the tiny flower that dares to bloom in the dry and thirsty place.  Hope.

Often times I have thoughts stirring in my mind and heart and I jot notes down to go back to when I have some time.  One of my recent entries simply said this:

H-Holding
O-Onto
P-Promises
E-Expectantly

A few weeks ago, Pastor Rita Langeland of Hidden With Christ Ministries, a precious woman with an amazing heart, dropped in to share a word the Lord had given her for our church family.  I was excited to hear that her word was titled: Get Your Hopes Up!  As I took notes, I appreciated her explanation of two different hopes:

Hope in the Changeable
Hope in the Unchangeable

If you are like me, you probably don’t have to go too far back in your memory to find a time when you were hopeful for something and ended up with a bucketful of disappointment! Unfulfilled hopes are a part of life.  It’s not that we shouldn’t desire these things… a certain job, a newer car, a better living situation, etc.  But rather that we shouldn’t put our hope IN or our reliance ON those things.  Hoping in desired circumstances is hope in the changeable.  It is hope that more often than not, may disappoint.

But… hope in the unchangeable will not disappoint!  Hope in God’s faithfulness, His unchanging love, His lovingkindness, His mercy, and His grace… that is hope that will never let us down!  No matter the circumstances that we encounter, we can confidently trust that God’s plans for us are to prosper us!  Romans 8:28 states that when we are lovers of God, all things in our lives will ultimately work out for our good.  That is something worth placing our hope in!

I’ve revised my notes to say:

H-Holding
O-Onto HIS
P-Promises
E-Expectantly

What word has the Lord whispered into your heart and spirit?  Is it a verse you are clinging to?  Is it a promise you are standing on?  Hold onto hope in the Unchangeable One!  Though you may have to wait, you will not be disappointed by His faithfulness!

Let Your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in You alone.” Psalm 33:22 NLT

Shake Off Those Broken Chains!

“There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it
I don’t deserve it
Still You give yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God”1

Reckless Love by Cory Asbury

Last night, these lyrics stirred in my spirit as I dozed off to sleep and were my first waking thoughts.

How amazing is God’s pursuing love!

He came to set me free, to heal my heart, to give me abundant life!

God pursues me. And He pursues you!

God pursues us because He loves us.  But He also pursues us because He wants us to live an abundant life and enjoy relationship with Him.

Here’s the caveat though…  do you WANT to be rescued, free, healed, and loved?

Seems like a silly question, I know.

Enjoying relationship with any person involves some amount of trust.  The depth of your vulnerability will determine the depth of your relationship. Deeply loving requires the courage to be deeply open to others.

If you’ve been alive for a decade or longer, you’ve experienced the pain that also comes when trust is violated.  Friends betray us, acquaintances gossip about us, co-workers sabotage us, loved ones leave us… with each additional hurt, we begin to build walls around our heart.  We start to believe that no one is trustworthy.  We determine it’s better to only rely on ourselves.  Sound familiar?

This prison of choice keeps us safe from pain,  but it also insulates us from authentic love!

It’s here, in this place, that God’s love pursues us!  He wants us to know His love… but we need to trust His love!  We need to trust that God loves us enough to kick down our heart-walls, tear down the lies we’ve believed, and find us in our lonely place.

When Your Heavenly Father charges in kicking down those heart-walls, pouring out His unending, unconditional love, and declaring truth that topples lies, you have a choice to make…

A: Stay safe inside your fortress, risk free but love free

B: Shake off the chains of fear and step into love’s embrace!

Jesus came to bring us good news, to heal the brokenhearted, to bring liberty to captives, to open prison doors, to replace mourning with joy (Isaiah 61:1-3)! Our responsibility is trust!  It’s simple, yet complex!

*Trusting the Lord requires believing that He has your best interest at heart.*

It’s much like Peter stepping out of the boat.  The waves look insurmountable, the water seems overwhelming, but look into the eyes of Jesus!  Those eyes promise His eternal presence, His never-ending love, and His covenant relationship!

Let Him light up your shadows!  Let Him kick down your walls!  Let His Truth replace your lies!  Shake off those broken chains and step into the Light. Our God is trustworthy; He won’t break your heart!

All I Need

What is it that you need in 2018?

I love learning about the names of the Lord sprinkled throughout Scripture!  When I need healing, He is Jehovah-Rophe. When I need provision, He is Jehovah-Jireh.  When I need forgiveness, He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu. When I need His presence, He is Jehovah-Shammah.  He is my Counselor, my Everlasting Father, the God of Angel Armies, and King of kings. When Moses asked God what name he should give to the children of Israel, God’s response was, “I AM WHO I AM.”

Sometimes… I don’t know what I need. I don’t know what to ask for.  I don’t have the words to ask.  But He knows!  I simply need Him! The I AM!  HE IS what I need and He knows what my heart needs… He reminds me “I AM enough!”

He is I AM…

He is enough for you! He is enough for me!

I was meditating on this idea when I read from one of my Christmas gifts: “I Hear His Whisper” by Brian Simmons.

“I {God} am enough for you.  When you face difficulties and limitations, I will whisper into your heart, “I am enough.”  I will not shield you from every hardship, but I am enough as you walk through them with your eyes set on Me.  I am enough.  I will be your wraparound shield in the midst of difficulty.

Your thoughts cannot contain the love I have for you.  And you will never be able to comprehend with your mind the plans that I have for you.  Yet I am enough, and all you need to know is that I am here for you.”

No matter who you are or where you’ve been or what you’ve done, you are deeply loved and treasured by God!  Turn your eyes to Him and open your heart to His love and grace!  You don’t need to change to receive His love; it’s a done deal!  He loves you and there’s nothing you can do or not do that will change His love for you!

Whatever 2018 brings, don’t face it alone!  You have an advocate in Jesus!  He is your Comforter, your Healer, your Deliverer, and the Lover of your soul!  Our Heavenly Father, the Great I Am is enough!

May the Lord richly bless you and your family in 2018!  May it be a year of wonderful surprises, amazing victories, and Kingdom revelations!  May you know God’s deep, unconditional, abiding love more than you ever thought that you could!

Live Loved,
